Raising Well-Rounded Kids: 10 Philly Classes Outside the Box

There's no doubt about, the Delaware Valley offers no shortage of great classes for Philly area kids. Whether you're looking for swimming, dance, acting, or something crafty, you can find just about anything around here. That's why we've decided to round up some of the more unique classes for kids around Philadelphia. Now is the perfect time to expose your kids to as much as possible so they can discover their own passions.

Philadelphia School of Circus Arts- Philadelphia
With classes for kids ages 3-18 in everything from aerial and acrobactics to contortions, parkour, and juggling, Philadelphia School of Circus Arts has so many classes for kids to choose from. There are also general circus classes for the beginner. The best part is it will keep kids active and moving!

Lume Creative Learning Studios- Philadelphia
Kids can take classes like Itty Bitty Breakdance, Comic Book Art, and Tween Costume Sewing at Lume Studios. Classes are available for kids as young as 1.

Center on Central- Paoli
Center on Central offers classes in Fashion Design, Pottery, Mixed Media, and more. They also offer seasonal parent and child pottery workshops and Pottery Kids' Night Out (if you're looking for a date night excuse).

Philly Improv Theatre- Philadelphia
PHIT offers classes in improvisation for comedians in Kindergarten through 12th grade. Attend a free open house to see if your kid is interested and to learn more about improv before you sign up. PHIT also has kid-friendly shows if you're interested in seeing what improv is all about.

Fleisher Art Memorial- Philadelphia
Fleisher offers classes in Cambodian dance, fiber arts, sculpture, printmaking, digital photography, and more for kids ages 5-18. Classes are offered in fall, winter, and spring terms. Due to the popularity of these classes, they are drawn by lottery, so be sure to check in early.

BSD Code + Design Academy- Bryn Mawr
Kids ages 8 and up can learn how to code at Code Club. Kids will learn everything from web and app design to video game development and robotics.

Kulu Mele- Philadelphia
Kulu Mele offers West African Dance and Drumming classes for kids age 5-18. Kids will learn about West African Culture, and get great exercise!

Kyo Daiko- Philadelphia
Learn the Japanese art of drumming at these Taiko classes. Children ages 12 and up are welcome with parental supervision. Taiko is also a great workout so wear sneakers and comfortable clothes and bring water with you. 

Handwork Studios- Narberth
Handwork Studio offers classes in Handwork & Machine Sewing and Fashion & Machine Sewing, as well as Open Studio classes for older students, and Homeschool classes. These classes are perfect for kids in grades K-10 who are interested in sewing. Classes are taught in Fall, Winter, and Spring Sessions. Handwork Studios also has several camp options.

Splash Lab Arts- Philadelphia
Splash Lab Arts offers after school classes in cartooning, calligraphy, printmaking, mask making, and more. They also offer drop-off sessions if you need a little time to yourself.
