Cool Stroller Inventions Made by NYC Mommies

6/20/11 - By Swapna

They say necessity is the mother of invention. So since moms have a lot of needs (we're talking G-rated ones here), it's no surprise that they find creative ways to fulfill them.

New York City mothers are particularly imaginative, especially when it comes to making the most of our strollers. We use them the way suburban moms use their SUVs: They're our shopping carts and storage spaces.

With that in mind, three fabulous local mompreneurs came up with five smart, stroller-enhancing products, and we're giving one of each away.

OUR LATEST VIDEOS

Mommy Mitten
NYC mom of two Amy Sapirstein got the idea for the Mommy Mitten when she was shuttling her eldest around in a stroller sans gloves. We realize that right now it's hard to remember how cold it gets during winter, but six months ago you would have killed for one of these. The Mommy Mitten wraps around your stroller's handlebar and is lined in pink or turquoise fleece so your hands stay toasty. It also includes a small, zippered pocket, which is perfect for keys, cell phones, pacifiers, money, etc. $29.95 at mommymitten.com

StrollAway
Mary Ann Malone, a NYC mom of three who lives in a one-bedroom apartment, thought of the StrollAway after her building received a fire code violation because her stroller was parked in the hallway! (Clearly it got her creative fires burning.) An over-the-door hook, it's perfect for folding or umbrella models, and can hold up to 35 pounds. The StrollAway is made of sturdy steel and adjusts to a variety of door widths, no drilling or screws required. $39.99 at metrotots.com

Buggy Cup
Inspiration struck not once but three times for Greenwich Village mom of two and former graphic designer King-Yee Man. So far this self-professed "gear fanatic" has created a trio of helpful products, including this beverage holder, which is made of soft silver mesh and nylon, and can hold bottles up to 32 ounces. While most plastic cup holders are only meant for drinks, the Buggy Cup can accommodate all kinds of stuff in a punch: keys, toys, cell phones, you name it. It attaches with three adjustable Velcro straps, so once your kid outgrows the stroller you can use it on a bicycle or bed. $14.99 at think-king.com

Mighty Buggy Hook
Another King-Yee invention, the Mighty Buggy Hook makes it easier for your stroller to keep up with your shopping. Made of lightweight aluminum, the hook attaches with Velcro straps. Since it's a hook instead of a clip, you can easily slide bags on and off. $14.99 for a pack of two at think-king.com

Jumbo Swirly Hook
King-Yee's latest ware will be available for purchase at the end of June. A heavier duty version of the Mighty Buggy Hook, it attaches to the center of your stroller handlebar via Velcro and can hold multiple bags. $9.99 at think-king.com
