Explore the origin of the school lunch program in New York City schools and how it transformed the lives of turn-of-the-20th century Lower East Side kids – at the very place where it all began, the Henry Street Settlement.

Today, the idea of feeding kids lunch at school sounds elementary, but in the early 1900s, it was pretty radical. And what seems radical today? Some of the foods on those early school lunch menus – like mashed sweet potatoes in a cone!

Museum educators serve up some of those original school lunch meals to give kids a true taste of how the era’s ideas about nutrition, poverty, and immigrant culture came together to launch lunch.
