Walt Whitman’s Bicentennial Birthday Weekend

Celebrate the beloved poet's bicentennial birthday weekend at the Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site. Enjoy scholarly lectures, birthday parties for kids and adults, and readings of Whitman’s most celebrated works. High school and college students deliver presentations of their poetry, and docents in mid-19th century dress circulate with visitors.

9 am – 9 pm Tours of the Historic Birthplace begin and run throughout the day. $5 per person.
10:30am - 12 pm Scholars David Reynolds and Jerome Loving
1 - 4:Walt Whitman Initiative featuring 50 international scholars with Keynote Speaker, Ed Folsom
4:30 - 6 pm Happy Hour Birthday Celebration - Wine and Cake
8:30 - 9:30 pm Compagnia de’Colombarie, “More Or Less I Am” operatic and recitation performance. $5 per person.
9:30 - 10 pm Closing Ceremonies.
Saturday, June 1
9 am – 9 pm Tours of the Historic Birthplace begin and run throughout the day. $5 per person.
1 - 3pm “Poet’s Picnic”
3-5 pm Marathon Reading “Leaves of Grass” with the Bard’s Initiative.
5:30 pm “Multitudes” Performance with Kim and Valerie Nuzzo. $5 suggested donation.
Sunday, June 2,
10 am – 9 pm Tours of the Historic Birthplace begin and run throughout the day. $5 per person.
11 am - 5pm
High school and college students offer presentations of their poetry, art and music. Docents as historic figures in costume circulate with visitors.
