What We're Reading

Me

I've been fascinated to learn how the brain's executive function challenges many kids in school and at home.

The Big Kid

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one.

The LIttle Kid

A wonderful story with great illustrations and an environmental message that's not preachy or scary.

Top Resources for Traveling with Kids

I've actually been surprised at how hard it has been to find good resources for traveling with kids. As we were planning our family vacation for this summer, I was looking around online and found very few good sites for planning trips with kids. After scouring the web, here are the best resources I've found for traveling with kids:

Sheila Scarborough is a professional travel writer who keeps a family travel blog with lots of great info for travel around the US and abroad.About.com has a travel with kids site with lots of articles about family travel in the US and Europe written by their resident expert. A good place to start.

If you are traveling to Europe with kids, Kids Europe is one of the best resources I have found. It has many articles about things to do in different destinations and you can subscribe to an email newsletter on family travel. In addition, they sell Kids Europe Discovery Journals for different European destinations that teach kids about the local culture and keep them occupied with customized games and activities to help make that endless stream of churches a little more palatable to little ones.

Moms Mini Van is an excellent site with lots of ideas of how to make traveling in the car with kids easier for those long family road trips. Car game ideas, free printables, tips for car sickness and more.

Family Fun Magazine is a Disney publication, but they often have interesting ideas for family travel all over the US, which you can read about on their website.

My blog friends over at RookieMoms have a fun string of A Week in... posts. Each one is written by local mom and gives you an itinerary of stuff to do with a baby for every day of the week. If you're not planning on traveling, check out the Mommy Poppins entry, A Week in New York.

Do you have any good resources for traveling with kids?

We ran into this same

Submitted by Jackie on February 2, 2008 - 1:14pm.

We ran into this same dilemma - a lack of great online family travel info - so last fall, we started up a series of family travel features on our blog, aParentlySpeaking, and in print in our newspaper travel section, where readers weigh in with their favorite destinations, family-friendly hotels and cool sightseeing that appeals to both kids and grown-ups. We've been getting some fantastic travel advice -- Delicious Baby's Debbie (see comment #3 above) had wonderful suggestions on touring Rome with a bambino -- and we're always looking for contributors. Matter of fact, MommyPoppins, we'd love to feature you too.

We seeem to spend more time

Submitted by Cynthia on November 13, 2007 - 12:37am.

We seeem to spend more time researching where to go/what to do and where to stay for our annual family holiday than actually being on holiday. I decided to put together a website for families to recommend their best holidays and destination tips to inspire us all! If you've been somewhere great or know a playground, friendly restaurant etc, share it! on www.myfamilybreak.com.

Audra, That is a great book.

Submitted by mommy on January 15, 2008 - 7:18am.

Audra,
That is a great book. We used it on our recent trip and it has lots of general tips about traveling with older kids and some cool places all over Europe to check out. It's not too great for detailed info on any particular place though. Thanks for the tip!

I found a GREAT book for any parents thinking about or planning to take their kids to Europe. It is appropriately called Take Your Kids to Europe" />by Cynthia Harriman. A great resource.
