What We're Reading

Me

I've been fascinated to learn how the brain's executive function challenges many kids in school and at home.

The Big Kid

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one.

The LIttle Kid

A wonderful story with great illustrations and an environmental message that's not preachy or scary.

TADA!: Youth Theater Kids Really Get In To

Feb 4 2009

200902041045.jpgConfession #1: Children’s shows typically bore me to tears. Yes, even my own children’s school productions. Get them up, get them on, then get me out. Add my children’s short attention spans and tendency to sigh and squirm excessively throughout performances and you get the picture of our typical family theater outing. So it was with great trepidation that I ventured to TADA Youth Theater with my five- and three-yr old daughters for a child-actor only production, “Golly Gee Whiz!”. Much to my surprise, not only did the show command the undivided attention of every child in the audience, but (confession #2) all of us, repeat ALL of us, thoroughly enjoyed the show.

(Keep reading for a special offer from TADA!)

“Golly Gee Whiz!” provides a timely take on the escapist entertainment of the Great Depression–-think “Casablanca” meets “The Little Rascals.” A light-hearted backyard musical about children saving the town of Happyville from gloom through staging a production, the show brims with a wide variety of songs and dance numbers. You won’t find any Disney scripts or scores here–each TADA! Youth Theater Show is completely original–a welcome relief for any parent who has suffered through years of mermaid songs and soulless yearnings for princes. “Golly Gee Whiz” offered love songs such as “Gee, You’re Swell” and “Nobody’s Sweetheart”; a tough kid number, “Small Parts, “; a Carmen Miranda-infused, giggle-inducing Latin number, “The Costume Mistress”; a rousing, sparkle-filled company finale, “Lady Liberty” and more. The young actors’ sheer enthusiasm lends authenticity to the show and carries the audience along. TADA! Youth Theater’s intimate space offers an immersive experience–we were literally 4 feet from the stage—and simple sets allow the truly talented cast to shine. With ticket prices of $8/15 for children and $20/25 for adults, this is a fantastic children’s entertainment bargain. Believe me, miss these young actors here, and the next time you’ll see them will be on Broadway, after shelling out the big bucks to groan your way through yet another Disney production.

“Golly Gee Whiz!” runs through February 15, every Saturday and Sunday at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m..   TADA! Youth Theater’s Spring production, “Everything About a Family (Almost)” runs April 17-May 17, and the Summer production, “The Little House of Cookies” will run July 10-August TADA! Youth Theater, now in its 24th year, produces original musical theater productions year-round featuring NYC kids ages 8-18. Additionally, TADA! Youth Theater offers musical theater camps in multiple NYC locations; ,musical theater birthday parties; an annual play writing contest; new musical readings and workshops; after-school programs; in-school arts education residencies; and classes for infants through 8th grade. TADA Youth Theater and the Resident Youth Ensemble won the 2008 Coming Up Taller Award, the nation’s highest honor, selected by the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities.
