What We're Reading

Me
200908230839.jpg

I've been fascinated to learn how the brain's executive function challenges many kids in school and at home.

The Big Kid
200908230840.jpg

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one.

The LIttle Kid

A wonderful story with great illustrations and an environmental message that's not preachy or scary.

Can't keep up with all your reading? Here's the top news stories and fun links from last week:

If you haven't watched Barak Obama's Speech on Race, you must do so now. Right now.

Public Health Risk Seen as Parents Reject Vaccines. Where do you stand???”NY Times

NewYorkology reports that NYC outdoor ice skating rinks are closing for the season with the exact dates for each rink.

Every New Yorker just wishes they had one more room. The Strap on Backpack Room adds 80 square feet onto your apartment with a 2 ton room that hangs from the outside of your window.??”Wired Magazine via Roosevelt Islander

Going to LA? Check out the post about cool baby stores in LA ??” Gridskipper

Kindergarten Crop: A baby boomlet creates a kindergarten admissions crisis with more shut-outs than ever (Warning: If you are already feeling stressed about getting your kid into a school do not read this article)??”NY Magazine

And if that doesn't make you anxious about your child's academic career, how about the Incredible Reading 17 Month Old Baby from The Today Show. Watch the video, this is no joke.

Re Kindergarten.. It's

Submitted by RK on April 1, 2008 - 6:58am.

Re Kindergarten.. It's simple

1. apply to all private schools and G&T programs that you can see your child in. Pay the fees and deposits. Heck, you'll be spending $350K+ over 12 years for private school, "throw away" some money now if you need to.
2. didn't get in anywhere? Go to your zoned public school, join the parent's association, get involved, make a difference.
3. don't like your zoned school? Move to a district or suburb where you do like the school. That's how the rest of the country works!

My 4yo will be applying this fall.

There's a version of Obama's

Submitted by Bill Horn on March 23, 2008 - 7:39pm.

There's a version of Obama's speech with a synced transcript on the Times website:

i listened to Senator

Submitted by uhuh on March 25, 2008 - 4:49am.

i listened to Senator Obama's speech. Why is he posing himself as a black man as opposed to a bi-racial man? Certainly, he talks about his mother being white at the beginning of the speech, but from that point on, he merely refers to the "black community."

I like Obama! I really do... but I don't think this speech is timely at all. Why didn't he talk about all of this before Rev. Wright's comments? Why didn't his speechwriters mock this up before any of the primaries? I have a feeling that Senator Obama is firmly aware that politics is a show and the time is ripe ONLY now for this speech. It's a safer time to deliver it.

He says, "...race is an issue that I believe this nation cannot afford to ignore right now."

NO KIDDING. We couldn't afford to ignore the race issue in the 60's either, but somehow... we did.
