I've been fascinated to learn how the brain's executive function challenges many kids in school and at home.

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one.

A wonderful story with great illustrations and an environmental message that's not preachy or scary.

Giveaway: Shark Boat Tour of the New York City Waterfalls!

Jun 25 2008

By Nina

One of the most anticipated events of this summer is the New York City Waterfalls. Starting on Friday, June 26th and running through October, four spots in the East River will be morphed into 100 foot high waterfalls. It's all part of a public art project by artist Olafur Eliasson who is challenging us island dwellers to pay a bit more attention to our water.

The five 90 to 120-foot tall installations will operate from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., seven days a week, and will be lit after sunset, adding a striking element to New York City’s iconic skyline. One will be by the Brooklyn anchorage of the Brooklyn Bridge, the other between Piers 4 and 5 at Furman and Joralemon Streets in Brooklyn. A third waterfall will be located in Lower Manhattan at Pier 35, and the fourth on the north shore of Governors Island.

The project uses only environmentally sustainable energy and they promise that the structures won't harm the fish, shoreline or aquatic life (yup, thats right, fish actually live in the East River).  And if your family gets really into it, you can follow up the waterfalls with trips to MOMA and PS1 where Eliasson currently has exhibits which incidentally are great for babies since they include lots of colored lights.

Bonus: Mommy Poppins is teaming up with Circle Line Tours to give 3 lucky readers a 4-pack of tickets to the Shark Boat speed boat tour of the waterfalls. What better way to get kids psyched to see some cool public art then by passing it at really fast speeds? And, learn after the jump about other FREE boat tours of the waterfalls that anyone can get tickets for!

The Shark Speedboat Ride is a 30-minute thrill ride that will pass by all the waterfalls as well as Lady Liberty. The show includes music and lots of excitement as you whiz through the East River. Since the boat goes really fast children must be at least 40" to ride and be able to sit in their own seats. Tickets normally cost $21 per adult and $15 per kid, but special for Mommy Poppins readers, get a $5 discount off each Shark Boat ticket by printing out this page and showing it at the box office, the discount is limited to 4 tickets per order.

To see the waterfalls at a more sane pace or with small children, you can take an official 30 minute tour on the Patriot or Zephyr.  TIckets are just $10 or $5 for children. Circle Line Downtown is also offering a limited number of FREE tickets to the official 30-minute tour.  The first three weeks have already been completely booked, but to try to get free tickets for after July 16th go to circlelinedowntown.com for directions on how to reserve free tickets to see the New York City Waterfalls. Another option for a free boat ride is to hop on the Staten Island Ferry or the Govenors Island Ferry which won't get you to all waterfalls but will still get you some nice views.

Please Note - the Circleline has two offices so be sure to go to the Circleline Downtown location which is at the Seaport and where all the waterfall tours will leave from.

How to enter our New York City Waterfalls Shark Boat GIveaway:

My plans for the summer are to learn from my friend Carolyn by following her credo - to save and collect as much time, energy, money, and wisdom as possible, in order to spend these lavishly on my family, friends, and community.

My summer plans include the baby bjorn sling carrier, juice boxes, the magic mommy bag (i.e a large enough purse that doubles as a baby bag with pull ups, baby diapers, and wipes, etc, oh and blankies) and my two wonderful yet highly energetic 3 year old and 3 month old, navigating our way (on public transportation no less) to discover the city through their little eyes and all over again for me with two additional bundles that don't require the bloomingdales brown bag logo on the outside. I sometimes miss my bachelorette days of spending money on the lovely sale priced summer steals @ bloomys. Now its the sale racks at children's place and gymboree!

My summer plans include taking the free ferry to Governors Island on a Friday for Free Bike Fridays. Every Friday this summer, they have bikes you can borrow for free- even little kids bikes- to bike around their amazing historic district and see the Statue of Liberty up close. The bikes (and 4 seater surreys) are available for rent on Saturdays and Sundays, but on Fridays they're free! Here's the website with info on how to get there, etc : www.govisland.com

Submitted by Michele on June 26, 2008 - 9:11am.

My son and I will revel in some quiet "huggable" time after his full camp days; spend a week of calmness on Cape Cod, digging for razor clams out in the bay when the tide is at its lowest in the early morning; discuss the merits of first grade and how to overcome rites of passage anxiety during the new school year; thoughtfully consider whether a small dog should be added to our household; enjoy my wedding to a lovely man, whom my son adores (although he insists that at the ceremony, when he is summoned to read something warm and fuzzy, he will announce that Peter and I should split up instead of unite); and enjoy the many free summer events in NYC...and, of course, spend time at the Red Hook Pool.

Submitted by April Fulton on June 26, 2008 - 1:23pm.

With the ecomony in a slump and with the rising cost it is not affortable for my family of five to vacation this summer. Instead we will spend the summer here in NYC and now that I discovered MOMMY POPPINS, I plan to use this site daily to plan free and affortable activities for my family to enjoy this summer. Many of the activities, I had no knowlegde of prior to entering this site, NYC has something for everyone and thanks to MP my family vacation will be spent through out the City.

Submitted by Tanya Marrero on June 26, 2008 - 4:42pm.

This summer My son and I will be volunteering our time at our local community center for our third year. It is also a great way to spend time with our community families. I usually surf the Mommy Poppins, Go City Kids, River to River, and NYC Parks and Recreation websites to see what free fun and educational activities are happening in the city. We can always find something fun to do. We join our local library reading clubs which gives out cool prizes. We are looking forward to visiting the new improved Sony Wonder Technology lab in July. We will also be spending time at our local pools to keep cool. We hope everyone has a great summer too.

My summer plan is to go camping July 4th weekend with my husband, two kids, family and close friends. Take my 2 year old and 5 month infant to appreciate NY art such the waterfall by artist Olafur Eliasson. We will also travel to Florida as a birthday/anniversary gift. I live in upstate NY therefore I will take advantage of all the free reading times for toddlers at the public libraries. I will treat my children to every museum and concert offered for free so my kids can learn to appreciate music and art. I will spend majority of my summer teaching my children to read, play piano, play sports, and learn the bible.
