What We're Reading

Me
200908230839.jpg

I've been fascinated to learn how the brain's executive function challenges many kids in school and at home.

The Big Kid
200908230840.jpg

My daughter loved this so much, we read it aloud to the whole family. Then moved on to the next one.

The LIttle Kid

A wonderful story with great illustrations and an environmental message that's not preachy or scary.

13 Great Hot Chocolate Spots in Brooklyn

13 Great Hot Chocolate Spots in Brooklyn

Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, which means six more weeks of winter. Luckly, we've lined up 13 of the best places to grab hot chocolate in Brooklyn, just in time for the cold, dark February weather. And if Phil is to be believed, you'll be enjoying a hot cup well into March.

See our posts on where to get a great cup of hot cocoa in Manhattan and Queens also.

Curl Up With A Good Story Time in Brooklyn

Curl Up With A Good Story Time in Brooklyn

Even if you're a crackerjack story reader (silly voices, accents and all), most kids appreciate a new face behind even the most familiar books now and then, which is why story times are a swell way to spend an hour or two. Most storytimes are free (or cheap) and some venues also offer other activities or tempting kids' book-browsing, so the fun can continue after reading time ends.

Luckily, Brooklyn has plenty of regular story time opportunities for kids, but if you're looking for more, check out our earlier post on NYC Story Times (mostly Manhattan). Or add yours to the list in the comments section below.

Brand Spanking New: Dewey's Candy Store in DUMBO

Brand Spanking New: Dewey's Candy Store in DUMBO

When did I become the type of person that travels to another borough because she heard a new candy store opened up? I have no explanation, but that's just what we did yesterday after seeing wonderful pictures of this fantastic new sweetopia in DUMBO, Dewey's Candy.

Music Classes for Babies, Toddlers and Kids in Brooklyn

Music Classes for Babies, Toddlers and Kids in Brooklyn

In “Tangled Up In Blue”, Bob Dylan sings of Montague St. that “There was music in the cafes at night and revolution in the air”. I’m not sure any of that is true of Brooklyn Heights in 2010 but there are certainly a lot of children’s music classes in the neighborhood and the surrounding neighborhoods of DUMBO, Cobble Hill, Carroll Gardens, Boerum Hill and Red Hook. Maybe they can help your child turn into the next Bob Dylan . . . or maybe just bring some music to Montague St in 2035.

DUMBO Kite Flying Society

Submitted by mommy on November 6, 2009 - 12:58am
When: November 7, 2009 - 10:00am
Where:
DUMBO Kite Flying Society! Don’t ask our members the secrets to building the world’s best kites. We think most of them will be under ten years old and might be flying their first kite, and besides, no one’s telling. If we told you, you’d miss the fun. Besides we’re not founding the grandest society to ever plaster itself across the DUMBO sky for nothing. Introducing: the DUMBO Kite Flying Society. DKFS members arise on the first Saturday morning of every month to ascend and soar between the Brooklyn and Manhattan bridges, glide over the East River, and vie for the titles of biggest kite, smallest kite, worst kite, longest flying kite and most improved kite. DKFS members salute innovative kite engineers of all skills provided they possess the will and fortitude of kite fliers who have come before; such as Alexander Graham Bell, Benjamin Franklin, the Wright Brothers, and Submarine Spies, mariners who lofted antennas into the sky to talk to the folks back home. Second only to birds (poor Icarus!), kites were the first inspiration to explore reality of lifting man into the sky. Come fly a kite! Starter kites provided! Certificate of membership and kite flying license’s will be issued, by us. Read about the DUMBO Kite Flying Society in the New York Daily News! First Saturday of every Month, Brooklyn Bridge Park* (*That's the City Park at the foot of Main Street, not the State Park, the State Park has rules and they won’t let you fly a kite. We told them to go fly a kite.) galapagosartspace.com" Read more »

15 Halloween Parades for NYC Kids

15 Halloween Parades for NYC Kids

If everybody loves a parade, everybody must be absolutely smitten with a Halloween parade. You should probably take your kids to the big VIllage Halloween Parade once just for the sheer theater of it, but most years we stick to the little neighborhood parades. The littler Halloween parades are great for kids, not just because of the lack of mobs, but most of them anyone can just jump in and you'll see the most fun, creative homemade costumes all in one place.

I've gathered up a bunch of alternative Halloween parades for kids that sound like a a lot of fun to participate in or just watch. And if you don't live in a great trick or treating neighborhood, this is a great excuse to join in the fun in another neighborhood. Go for the parade. Stay for the trick or treating!

EVENT LISTING

Art Under the Bridge Festival
The 13th annual D.U.M.B.O. Art Under the Bridge Festival® from Sept. 25th to Sept. 27th, 2009 FREE

A three-day multi-site neighborhood-wide event is a one-of-a-kind art happening: where serendipity meets the haphazard and where the unpredictable, spontaneous and downright weird thrive with touchable, accessible, and interactive art, on a scale that makes it the nation's largest urban forum for experimental art.

Art Under the Bridge is an opportunity for young artists to use any medium imaginable to create temporary projects on-the-spot everywhere and anywhere, completely transforming the Dumbo section of Brooklyn, New York, into a vibrant platform for self-expression. In addition to the 80+ projects throughout the historical post-industrial waterfront span, visitors can tour local artists' studios or check out the indoor video_dumbo, a non-stop program of cutting-edge video art from New York City and around the world.

Note: some screening may be needed for artworks not appropriate for young children (depending on your sensibilities).

See the whole schedule and download a map of events at www.dumboartfestival.org
